Last year, Omega and Nekton, a non-profit research foundation headquartered in the United Kingdom, launched a new diving watch, continuing to work to protect our oceans and the Indian Ocean. The new model Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial Master Chronometer Nekton watch replica 210.32.42.20.01.002 uses a polished and brushed stainless steel case, equipped with a grade 5 titanium unidirectional rotating diving bezel.

Black Wave Dial

The dial carries over the now-iconic wave motif in a laser-ablated black ceramic (hence the ZrO2 noted on the dial) that is matte finished. The closed caseback features an embossed Nekton submarine medallion with the Seamaster 2 name illustrated on the side. Steel and Titanium

The case of this new Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton replica is made of steel, but it uses titanium for its bezel. Why? I asked and Omega replied that it has to do with the manufacturing process. Using laser ablation for the finish of the bezel will affect the structure of the stainless steel, resulting in discoloring. Also, by changing the structure of the material, it becomes prone to corrosion. By using (grade 5) titanium, there are no issues with discoloring and corrosion. Creating the entire watch of titanium was not according to the plan. It would have a negative effect on the price tag and the 300M Bond edition is already in titanium.

Bracelet and Rubber Strap

There’s little wrong with the 9-row bracelet for this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M replica. But yet, I prefer it on the rubber strap. The rubber strap gives a sportier look and a nice contrast with the steel (and titanium). I feel that this watch on the bracelet is a bit too metallic, for my taste. However, if I am to purchase this new Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton edition, I think I will buy it on a bracelet and add the rubber strap separately. Based on experience, I know it is often more expensive to buy a steel bracelet than to add a separate strap. Just in case I change my mind in the future. When you’re very confident you never want to wear it on the bracelet, it will save you a few hundred for sure.

Caliber 8806 Movement

The replica watch’s caseback features an engraved embossed Nekton submarine medallion, “NAIAD LOCK, DIVER 300 M,” lettering, and the watch’s water-resistance, as a tribute to the partnership.

Beating inside the 42-mm-diameter case is Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8806. The self-winding movement features a free sprung-balance with a silicon balance spring, holds a power reserve of 55 hours, and meets both the COSC chronometer certification standards as well as the METAS standards of magnetic resistance to 15,000 gauss. The movement’s rhodium-plated rotor and bridges feature Geneva waves in arabesque, a familiar decorative finish for Omega calibers.

Helium Valve

The grade 5 titanium bezel goes perfectly with the stainless steel case, there is no noticeable difference in color. Whereas grade 2 titanium, would be much darker. The finish on the case is beautiful, brushed sides and polished facets on the lugs and crown guard. At 10 o’clock, you will find this model’s famous helium valve.

Some people truly dislike the extra crown, but I think it looks cool, even though I will (most probably) never use it. Since it has been used on the Seamaster 300M replica since 1993, I’ve become accustomed to it. I  guess it would seem awkward to me now, were there no helium valve at 10 o’clock. Anyway, if you don’t like it, you either need to deal with it or pass on this watch. There’s no other way.

The Omega Seamaster 300M and the Seamaster Planet Ocean are Omega's most popular dive watches on the market. Those who are familiar with Omega know that there is also an all-ceramic "high-end series" of Omega dive watches, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean "Deep Sea Black" replica (ref. 215.92.46.22.01.001). By comparing it with the regular steel case Planet Ocean, I also found that the all-ceramic Planet Ocean Black has an unusual texture in my hand, with higher value and quality.

The Case

The biggest feature of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT Deep Black replica is its all-ceramic design. The entire watch, from the case, bezel, dial, crown, helium valve, clasp, all these visible parts, except for the strap, movement, hands are all ceramic. The "Deep Sea Black" comes in 4 main color schemes (not counting the special models), all black, black red, black blue, black gold, and I'm only talking about the all black model. Different colorways have different treatments for ceramics (like the black-blue model, which is brushed matte). In this all-black model, the entire watch is made of mainly polished ceramic. The case and bezel are extensively polished, and the watch looks very bright in the light, with a more pronounced sense of quality and sophistication than the steel case.

With a diameter of 45.5mm it fits my fairly large wrists perfectly, but I did need a few days to get used to this size. Normally, my watches are a tad bit smaller. The black rubber strap fits like a glove and is comfortable from the first moment when you slide the watch on to your wrist.

Not only the diameter is impressive, the watch is also rather thick. It measures 17.8mm in height and that is a lot. It does make the watch feel a bit top heavy at first, especially on the light-weight rubber strap. "Deep Sea Black" uses tape. The outside of the strap is a canvas-like fabric, the inside is rubber, and the clasp is a folding clasp. 

You’ll also note some dial differences which are important to talk about. The 43mm-wide Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT copy has 24-hour marked rotating bezel, while the Omega Seamaster Deep Black watch replica has a traditional 60-minute diver’s bezel. Omega designed a 24-hour scale into the dial itself – making it a nice hybrid solution for many users. The black ceramic dials are given a new style of Arabic numerals for 2016, and the hands are either 18k white or 18k Sedna gold (with SuperLumiNova luminant material).

The Dial

The polished white gold hands, orange tip and hour markers still give enough contrast to be perfectly readable though. The date is located at 3 o’clock and using a matt black disc with white printing. As you can see above, it contrasts a bit when you look at the dial from certain angles where it [the dial] appears to be shiny.

In low-light conditions, the watch is still perfectly readable and the extra hour hand (GMT) is a feature that I really fancy. The finish of the watch is what you should expect of a watch with this price tag. The case has the typical combination of polished and matt brushed surfaces, like we are used from their lyre lug design. The glossy dial might not be for everyone, as it can look very shiny from certain angles. See below. It is something you just should make up for yourself.

On the dial you will also find the 24 hour track on the rehaut. As I wrote above, the GMT function is something I applaud. Especially if you’re a frequent traveler, it is a very welcome feature.

The Caseback

An exhibition caseback is a good thing because we get to see a very admirable movement used in the replica Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT Deep Black watches. Inside is the in-house made Omega caliber 8906 “Master Chronometer” movement. This automatic Co-Axial movement operates at 3.5Hz (25,200bph) with a power reserve of about 60 hours. It’s a strange take, given that there is only so much you can do with a bezel and that there are many more examples of positive relief bezels beyond the Yacht-Master that don’t come in for the same flak.

I have never heard anyone call the Oris, Blancpain, or even Paul Picot watches with a bezel like this a Yacht-Master copy. Additionally, this bezel on the Omega Seamaster 300M imation is, of course, a proper diving bezel. Conversely, the bezel on the Yacht-Master is bi-directional and therefore pretty useless for dive timing. I used to have a Yacht-Master 16622 myself. While I liked it at the time, I feel there is little that these watches have in common other than how the bezel looks.

Nekton Submersible caseback

The submersible that the Nekton Foundation is using, goes by the name of Seamaster 2. Named after the ship that Omega ambassador Sir Peter Blake sailed. I’ve touched upon that in the introduction article the other week as well. The Seamaster 2  is embossed on the caseback of this new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton edition copy. Although I wasn’t aware of Nekton before Omega partnered with them, I do think it looks very cool on the watch. Even when I would not particularly interested in Nekton, I would not mind having it on the caseback of the watch. This also results in being unable to see and enjoy the looks of the movement, of course.

Omega Caliber 8806

In the initial announcement, I wrote that this watch had a movement with a “special luxury finish”. Although it does have a very nice finish, I interpreted the press release from Omega in the wrong way. I thought it had a finish different from the other caliber 8800 movements. It doesn’t. It has the Geneva waves in arabesque as you can see above. Caliber 8806 is a nice movement to observe, but you’ll have to work with pictures of it. It is the same movement as used in the titanium Omega Seamaster 300M Bond. What I like about it, is that it doesn’t have a date complication. It keeps the dial very clean. And in all honesty, I don’t need a date on a watch. When I wake up in the morning, I see the date on my iPhone, and don’t need to be reminded everytime I look at my watch.

On the wrist

In the past, I have been very enthusiastic about the imation Omega Seamaster Diver 300M collection. I have a couple of the old 300M models, and I am sure I will add a newer version to my modest collection as well. While the titanium 300M Bond edition has a lot of cool ingredients, there’s only so much I can spend on watches every year. My days in banking are over and on top of that, I have a family now.

But, this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton imation is a very interesting addition to the 300M collection and with a more attractive price tag. I enjoyed the steel and Sedna gold 300M on rubber (click here) and made it one of my favorites in the past, but this Nekton edition makes me rethink that. The matte dial, the titanium positive relief bezel, and the no-date display make this a winning combination. The 42mm size is perfect for my 19cm wrist and especially on the rubber strap, which is soft and comfortable to wear.

Price

The price is significantly higher than the normal 300M version, which has a retail price of €4,600. This Nekton edition has a price tag of €5,500 on rubber (210.32.42.20.01.002), and €5,800 on steel (210.30.42.20.01.002). The Nekton will be available starting in October 2020.

The Speedmaster is a watch that needs no introduction in the watch world. It’s an iconic design that has stood the test of time and is instantly recognizable. The new Omega Speedmaster CK2998 Pulsometer is fitted with a steel case, measuring in at 39.7mm in diameter with a lug spacing of 19mm, suggesting that it will wear quite nicely on most wrist sizes, but difficult to find alternative strap options due to the 19mm lug spacing. Covering the dial is a sapphire crystal, and surrounding it is a black ceramic bezel displaying a pulsometer scale. To hold the watch on your wrist, the CK2998 comes on a perforated black leather strap, with white rubber interior. Beating along inside this watch is the Omega Calibre 1861, a manually wound chronograph movement found inside the current Moonwatch model.

Movement

The Calibre 1861 features a power reserve of 48 hours, a frequency of 21,600bph, and has more than proven its reliability over the years. As far as aesthetics, this limited edition closely resembles the blue CK2998 that we saw Omega release back in 2016, with a different colorway and a pulsometer scale in place of the tachymeter scale. This latest edition features a white dial with black sub-dials and outer track, with a contrasting red chronograph hand, and red “Speedmaster” text. The handset here differs from the standard “Moonwatch” hands, and instead features Alpha hands. Regardless of the nomenclature, I find the handset to be quite attractive on the watch, and of course no one can resist a panda dial these days. Altogether, the Omega Speedmaster CK2998 Pulsometer is unmistakably part of the Speedmaster family, while also bringing some new personality.

The most interesting thing to note on this version, in my opinion, is Omega’s decision to ditch the standard tachymeter scale, and in its place, put a pulsometer scale. Whereas the tachymeter scale is designed for use by race car drivers to calculate speed, the pulsometer is designed to calculate heart rate. While the pulsometer scale might be a slightly esoteric feature, I’d argue it’s at least somewhat useful today, unlike the tachymeter scale. While it would be best utilized if you were a doctor and actually regularly taking someone’s heart rate, I could also see this being used by athletes to track heart rates after a workout. Omega’s decision to include the pulsometer scale is actually a slight throwback to the way Omega used to offer the Speedmaster – buyers used to be able to select between the tachymeter scale (which has now become ubiquitous across the Speedmaster line), decimal scale, telemeter scale, or the pulsometer scale, depending on what the buyer would be using the chronograph for primarily.

I recently learned an interesting fact regarding the history of the Omega Seamaster collection. The Seamaster and Seamaster Planet Oceans that we know today are hardy tool watches suitable for diving, James Bond, and overall feeling like high-function instruments that is made really well. Every year at Baselworld, Omega announces a massive amount of new watches, and usually only a handful take the spotlight each year. Last year it was the Trilogy Collection and this year the new Seamaster 300M seemed to get all the love. However, Omega usually has a few sleeper hits up their sleeves, and for 2018, one of my favorite Omega releases is the latest addition to its CK2998 family, the Omega Speedmaster CK2998 Pulsometer Limited Edition watch.

Case

All in all, I really dig this watch. Some might loathe seeing yet another Speedmaster limited edition, but this one just does it for me. The panda dial is executed very well, and the red accents give the watch a nice sporty feel. On top of that, I’m always a big fan of brands using a scale other than the tachymeter for their chronograph bezels. Since I lack the ability to do complex math on the fly, and because my car has a functioning speedometer, I have no use, nor a reason to use, a tachymeter scale. Now, I’m no doctor, and I certainly don’t find myself measuring people’s pulses on a daily basis, but I still find the pulsometer scale to be a more useful feature than the classic tachymeter. This is a watch I could very easily see on my wrist as something that I’d enjoy wearing.
