Different colorways have different treatments for ceramics (like the black-blue model, which is brushed matte). In this all-black model, the entire watch is made of mainly polished ceramic. The case and bezel are extensively polished, and the watch looks very bright in the light, with a more pronounced sense of quality and sophistication than the steel case.

With a diameter of 45.5mm it fits my fairly large wrists perfectly, but I did need a few days to get used to this size. Normally, my watches are a tad bit smaller. The black rubber strap fits like a glove and is comfortable from the first moment when you slide the watch on to your wrist.

Not only the diameter is impressive, the watch is also rather thick. It measures 17.8mm in height and that is a lot. It does make the watch feel a bit top heavy at first, especially on the light-weight rubber strap. "Deep Sea Black" uses tape. The outside of the strap is a canvas-like fabric, the inside is rubber, and the clasp is a folding clasp. 

You’ll also note some dial differences which are important to talk about. The 43mm-wide Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT copy has 24-hour marked rotating bezel, while the Omega Seamaster Deep Black watch replica has a traditional 60-minute diver’s bezel. Omega designed a 24-hour scale into the dial itself – making it a nice hybrid solution for many users. The black ceramic dials are given a new style of Arabic numerals for 2016, and the hands are either 18k white or 18k Sedna gold (with SuperLumiNova luminant material).

The Dial

The polished white gold hands, orange tip and hour markers still give enough contrast to be perfectly readable though. The date is located at 3 o’clock and using a matt black disc with white printing. As you can see above, it contrasts a bit when you look at the dial from certain angles where it [the dial] appears to be shiny.

In low-light conditions, the watch is still perfectly readable and the extra hour hand (GMT) is a feature that I really fancy. The finish of the watch is what you should expect of a watch with this price tag. The case has the typical combination of polished and matt brushed surfaces, like we are used from their lyre lug design. The glossy dial might not be for everyone, as it can look very shiny from certain angles. See below. It is something you just should make up for yourself.

On the dial you will also find the 24 hour track on the rehaut. As I wrote above, the GMT function is something I applaud. Especially if you’re a frequent traveler, it is a very welcome feature.

The Caseback

An exhibition caseback is a good thing because we get to see a very admirable movement used in the replica Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT Deep Black watches. The screw-down Twinlock winding crown and the hermetically screwed-down caseback ensure the case’s water-resistance. The unique rotatable Ring Command bezel is rendered in typical Rolex style with hallmark fluting. The dial is bright black with a sunray finish and features applied hour markers in gold to match the case, all treated with Chromalight that emits a long-lasting blue glow in the dark. The gold hour and minute hands are skeletonised at the base and also treated with Chromalight at their tips. In contrast to the glossy sunray finish of the black dial, the second time zone disc is slightly recessed and features a sandblasted finish.

The Sky-Dweller, one of the most complicated models developed by Rolex, was presented at Baselworld 2012. Although it is made from elastomer, the Oysterflex bracelet cannot be written off as a conventional black rubber strap. A hybrid between a metal bracelet and a rubber strap, the Oysterflex is made up of flexible metal blades in titanium and nickel which are over-moulded with high-performance black elastomer. This combination ensures the resilience of a metal bracelet with the flexibility and comfort of a rubber strap, especially thanks to the “flaps” on the back that hug the wrist. The Oysteflex bracelet has a folding Oysterclasp in yellow or rose gold and features Rolex’s proprietary Glidelock extension system with six notches of 2.5mm allowing the length of the bracelet to be adjusted up to 15mm without tools.
