I have never heard anyone call the Oris, Blancpain, or even Paul Picot watches with a bezel like this a Yacht-Master copy. Additionally, this bezel on the Omega Seamaster 300M imation is, of course, a proper diving bezel. Conversely, the bezel on the Yacht-Master is bi-directional and therefore pretty useless for dive timing. I used to have a Yacht-Master 16622 myself. While I liked it at the time, I feel there is little that these watches have in common other than how the bezel looks.

Steel and Titanium

The case of this new replica Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton Black Ceramic watch is made of steel, but it uses titanium for its bezel. Why? I asked and Omega replied that it has to do with the manufacturing process. Using laser ablation for the finish of the bezel will affect the structure of the stainless steel, resulting in discoloring. Also, by changing the structure of the material, it becomes prone to corrosion. By using (grade 5) titanium, there are no issues with discoloring and corrosion. Creating the entire watch of titanium was not according to the plan. It would have a negative effect on the price tag and the 300M Bond edition is already in titanium.

Bracelet versus rubber strap

There’s little wrong with the 9-row bracelet for this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton replica. But yet, I prefer it on the rubber strap. The rubber strap gives a sportier look and a nice contrast with the steel (and titanium). I feel that this watch on the bracelet is a bit too metallic, for my taste. However, if I am to purchase this new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton edition replica, I think I will buy it on a bracelet and add the rubber strap separately. Based on experience, I know it is often more expensive to buy a steel bracelet than to add a separate strap. Just in case I change my mind in the future. When you’re very confident you never want to wear it on the bracelet, it will save you a few hundred for sure.

Nekton Submersible caseback

The submersible that the Nekton Foundation is using, goes by the name of Seamaster 2. Named after the ship that Omega ambassador Sir Peter Blake sailed. I’ve touched upon that in the introduction article the other week as well. The Seamaster 2  is embossed on the caseback of this new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton edition copy. Although I wasn’t aware of Nekton before Omega partnered with them, I do think it looks very cool on the watch. Even when I would not particularly interested in Nekton, I would not mind having it on the caseback of the watch. This also results in being unable to see and enjoy the looks of the movement, of course.

Omega Caliber 8806

In the initial announcement, I wrote that this watch had a movement with a “special luxury finish”. Although it does have a very nice finish, I interpreted the press release from Omega in the wrong way. I thought it had a finish different from the other caliber 8800 movements. It doesn’t. It has the Geneva waves in arabesque as you can see above. Caliber 8806 is a nice movement to observe, but you’ll have to work with pictures of it. It is the same movement as used in the titanium Omega Seamaster 300M Bond. What I like about it, is that it doesn’t have a date complication. It keeps the dial very clean. And in all honesty, I don’t need a date on a watch. When I wake up in the morning, I see the date on my iPhone, and don’t need to be reminded everytime I look at my watch.

On the wrist

In the past, I have been very enthusiastic about the imation Omega Seamaster Diver 300M collection. I have a couple of the old 300M models, and I am sure I will add a newer version to my modest collection as well. While the titanium 300M Bond edition has a lot of cool ingredients, there’s only so much I can spend on watches every year. My days in banking are over and on top of that, I have a family now.

But, this Omega Seamaster Diver 300M Nekton imation is a very interesting addition to the 300M collection and with a more attractive price tag. I enjoyed the steel and Sedna gold 300M on rubber (click here) and made it one of my favorites in the past, but this Nekton edition makes me rethink that. The matte dial, the titanium positive relief bezel, and the no-date display make this a winning combination. The 42mm size is perfect for my 19cm wrist and especially on the rubber strap, which is soft and comfortable to wear.

Price

The price is significantly higher than the normal 300M version, which has a retail price of €4,600. This Nekton edition has a price tag of €5,500 on rubber (210.32.42.20.01.002), and €5,800 on steel (210.30.42.20.01.002). The Nekton will be available starting in October 2020.

OMEGA And The America’s Cup

The America’s Cup is renowned as the oldest trophy in international sport and since 1851 is considered to be the most prestigious sailing race in the world. The concept goes that a trophy awarded to the winner of the America’s Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America’s Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. 2021 will see the 36th edition of the America’s Cup where Defender Emirates Team New Zealand will be racing against the winner of the Prada Cup, the Challenger Selection Series, with the winner being the first team to score seven points. The Dial

Looking at the dial, the Arabic numerals are actually blue with a red varnish on top. This produces a noticeable three-dimensionality which is quite striking. Turning the dial in different directions produces new and interesting viewing angles. I like to think this also has something to do with the size of the numerals themselves. The dial might be large, but the numerals are actually quite demure relative to the rest of the dial.  As a result, the numerals provide a nice pop of red as opposed to being the main attraction.
Between the red numerals, red minute hand, and thick blue surrounds on the hour markers and hands, viewing the time is easy. Now, I'm no yachting man (though I play one on TV), but I have to think such legibility is paramount and essential for elite yachting competition. The white dial has its own little quirks as well, depending on the light. Sometimes it has a smooth, almost lacquer-like texture, while other times it gives off the briefest indication of a silvered metallic sunburst effect. Both the Omega wordmark and logo are applied in blue. The blue application doesn't necessarily shine or reflect, but rather exudes a shimmer or sparkling effect.
On the dial, the trapezoidal markers are white, lume-filled, and surrounded in blue, while at 12, three, six, and nine, the markers are square-shaped. Each of the markers are concave towards the center which provides some really interesting geometric detail to an otherwise straightforward aspect of the watch. The date complication – often a point of contention – works nicely here. The surface area of the date window appears to take up effectively the same space as any one of the numerals. In doing so, the overall layout maintains symmetry and consistency. Would it have been cool for the numbers on the date wheel to have been red, or even in a roulette-style layout? Sure, but as it stands, I still think the white on white works well.

The Case

With its 43.50mm case and its diving credentials, this limited edition is technically no different from the third generation PO 600m introduced in 2016. This new version of the replica Omega Seamaster 43.5 mm watch (more an update than a brand new watch) was the occasion for Omega to demonstrate its technological savoir-faire in materials and watchmaking, as both displayed great innovation spirit. As far as I can tell, only once before with the X-33 Regatta produced for the New Zealand ETNZ sailing team back in 2017. Omega does indeed have a long history of producing various regatta and yacht-timing watches with unique complications and unconventional time displays, but they have understandably remained almost exclusively in the Seamaster collection. Even still, the venerable Speedy does make a lot of sense in this capacity – long before it was a moon watch, it was a racing watch built to calculate speed by measuring time over distance. And even in this application, it can certainly still excel.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Alinghi special editions make their way into the watchmaking canon. HYT famously partnered with the team on a trio of limited editions starting in 2015. Consequently, we’ve seen the Alinghi logo integrated with watch designs before. The dynamic red wave has always looked quite at home thanks to its circular form, but here Omega takes its integration one step further. On this new Omega Speedmaster replica, the Alinghi team logo is printed on a disc that occupies one of the three sub-dials.

Red

The red from the Alinghi’s logo has been carried over into the rest of the design for this edition. While the Apollo 8 had yellow accents, this Alinghi has red ones. The most obvious link to Alinghi is, of course, the rotating logo in the 6 o’clock subdial. Red can also be found on the hour markers, “Speedmaster” wording, chronograph hands, and the “Tachymetre” wording on the ceramic bezel.
The minute recorder at 3 o’clock shows the 4 and 5 minutes “tactical time display” in red as well. While I was not immediately convinced by the yellow of the Speedmaster Apollo 8 replica, the red is far more digestible. The Speedmaster Alinghi replica comes on a black and red perforated (racing) strap, made of rubber.

Dark Side

I wish Omega had been more cautious with the Dark Side collection from the start. In the first few years, Omega introduced quite a few variations. In hindsight, I think a slower, more thoughtful approach might have helped define the collection better. The Omega Apollo 8 replica was the first iteration of the Dark Side of the Moon that I truly love and consider it added value to the first DSoTM. This Omega Speedmaster Alinghi replica is the next addition that I think works really well. Even if you have no real connection to sailing or Alinghi, the red accents might be your thing. Now, it might have have been awfully cool for the luminous tachymeter scale to read in nautical knots rather than the traditional land & air-based miles-per-hour scale now emblematic on the Speedy, but other embellishments have been made to accommodate the Alinghi crewmen: particularly the 30-minute totalizer at 3:00 which places a greater emphasis on its first five minutes, enabling the skipper to dial in his starting sequence and hit the start line at just the right moment. The 12-hour totalizer at 6:00 is swapped out for a red anodized disc in the shape of Alinghi’s logo – a cardinal triangle at the top of the disc lets the viewer know when it has been zeroed, or how many hours have elapsed since the chronograph was started. The Milgauss went through a number of early iterations, including the addition of the signature lightning bolt second hand with the Ref. 6541. Despite having both the function and flare of a futuristic gadget, Rolex struggled to sell the Milgauss and eventually pulled the model from its catalogue in the late 1980s. After a nearly 20-year hiatus, the Milgauss replica watch returned in 2007 as the Ref. 116400 replica. But perhaps the best aspects of the dial are these two subsequent features. First, the seconds hand on this watch is the completely unique lightning bolt hand that is painted orange.  The color contrasts perfectly with the black dial and also matches the discreet seconds markings around the dial (also in orange).  And second, to complete the case, the dial is covered by the uniquely colored crystal matching the corporate colors of Rolex replica watch.  The crystal is perfectly transparent with hints of green that never overpowers and seem to change intensity depending on the angle you look at the dial or how light is reflected on it.  Finally, while you would not think that orange and green would work well together, it does so in this case in spades… and this is coming from someone whose color preferences tends to be conservative (read, black and white).

The Case

The Movement

Unlike dive watches or chronographs, the function of an antimagnetic watch is hidden within the case and movement. Only the name and second hand offer a suggestion that something scientific might be happening. I’ve spent weeks wearing it noticing only about +/- 1 or 2 seconds difference from my iPhone reference time which I used to set the Rolex Milgauss using the 3131 movement hacking feature.  The power reserve is 48 hours and the 3131 movement can also be wound manually by unscrewing the non-protected large but flat crown.  There is no date on the Rolex Milgauss replica watch 116400 since any cutout on the dial would likely interfere with the operation of the Faraday cage.
Finally, the 3131 movement includes the Rolex Parachrom hairspring which is made with a highly non-magnetic material, providing additional protection from the omnipresent fields that the Rolex Milgauss tries so hard to fight against. The Clasp

The folding clasp on the Rolex Milgauss replica watch is one that can create some debates.  Unlike the Oyster Flip Lock clasp that is found on the GMT Master II, this one does not have a folding lock and uses a loose bit that you pull with fingers (or nail) or push to create a lock.  That lever-like bit, even when closed, seems to be dangling and does not appear to be securely locked, while the rest of the clasp does lock quite nicely. At first, I did not appreciate this bracelet style, since the dangling part of the bracelet seemed to swivel a bit…  However, I have to come to appreciate the fact that it is a lot easier to open and close this bracelet than the Oyster Flip Lock on the GMT Master II.
