Judging by the photos, the original watch was slightly refinished with the signature angled parts of its light-weight titanium body smoothed and satin-finished and the distinct mainspring barrel drum redecorated to mimic the historic design of 250 GTO’s Borrani wire wheels.

The original black leather strap was, too, replaced with a brown Barenia calfskin strap. Featuring a nice contrasting stitching, the strap reminds the leather upholstery that was used in sports cars in 1960s.

The movement

The watch is still powered by the same HUB6010 manually wound caliber that seems to be designed and manufactured in-house, however, as another exclusive feature, its bridge may be decorated with the chassis number of a particular Ferrari 250 GTO belonging to a respective customer.

Although I was less than pleased with most of Hublot’s last creations, I must admit that this particular model looks simply great.

The titanium version is lighter on the wrist, and on the pocket but the proprietary gold model has some unique elements that make a compelling argument in favor of a precious metal, even if you’re the type who always prefers steel or titanium.

Full Magic Gold is marked as 18K gold but unlike others alloyed golds, which are typically 75% pure gold mixed with 25% of other alloys such as platinum, nickel, copper – Magic Gold’s 25% is made of ceramic boron carbide powder. The result: a scratch-resistant gold that is both certified as 18K by the Central Office for Precious Metals Control, and has a hardness rating of about 1,000 Vickers. For comparison, typically 18k gold of any color is 400 Vickers and most steel used in watches is 600 Vickers. Magic Gold is completely scratchproof, and it can only be scratched by a diamond.

Raw Magic Gold is yet to be machined and, because it is so hard, it can only be shaped by diamond-tipped tools, laser, and ultrasonic machining. In fact, to place the “18K” hallmark on the caseback, it must be done with a laser etching machine as traditional methods do not work.

One of the other key, and rarely mentioned, selling points of Magic Gold, is that it is extremely light for 18K gold. At 138 grams it weighs significantly less than a gold case of this size would normally be. Part of this is due to that fact that the bezel and case flanks are made from a lightweight resin material, and because the inner case is titanium, but still, it’s insanely light for 18K gold. The titanium version is only 14 grams lighter at 124 grams. For reference, a King Gold case, which does not have any ceramic mixed in, weighs a little over 170 grams. Normally the difference between gold (one of the heaviest watch case materials) and titanium (one of the lightest watch case materials) is far greater.

Additionally, Magic Gold has one more unique element: the surface has a sort of worn look that makes it appear almost like bronze, but without a chance of changing is color or forming a green patina.

Of course, if you like the look of titanium and want the lighter case, then that is a better option and will save you close to $15K. The entire case has been micro-blasted with beads resulting in a finish.

Uniquely, both watches feature two power reserve indications, allowing you to monitor the power reserve remaining by day (10 days), or view the warning indicator at 3 o’clock which turns red when there are only 2 days of power reserve remaining.

Another interesting feature is a rack and pinion system visible at 12 o’clock and which is animated when you wind the twin parallel mainspring barrels, which have a 240-hour maximum power reserve.

There are a variety of straps to choose from, and you basically have to use specific Hublot straps. The upside is that each strap uses a quick-release system where you simply push a button and pop the strap off, which is excellent.

Verdict

In conclusion, if you like the Meca-10 look, and can afford it, you have many good options, and even if the titanium or Magic Gold is not to your liking there are also all ceramic versions, blacked out titanium, and King Gold.

That said, the titanium has a really great look and the lowest price of all of them. Although, if you want gold, without the scratches or the weight, and the really cool bronze-ish look, then the Magic Gold is really an excellent choice. Hublot has not sold this alloy to anyone yet, but there is demand from other companies, and they intend to make it in other precious metals as well, perhaps platinum.

You may remember the UNICO movement from last year’s Baselworld when it served as the base for Hublot’s official World Cup timer. It has a power reserve of 72 hours.

The new Hublot Big Bang Perpetual Calendar Chrono is a release that we’re not surprised to see from a player like Hublot. It is loud and complex, with finish and style that we’ve come to expect from the manufacture. It is bound to be a popular piece among moneyed aficionados of the H-shaped screws out there. The case

The Hublot Classic Fusion Bronze Bucherer Blue Edition replica watch is based on the Classic Fusion Chronograph and so it comes in a 45mm-wide and 13.05mm-thick bronze case that has been given a special black brushed finish that is unlike most other bronze watches. The black brushed finish gives it a weathered look as if it has already been through a lot. The bezel is black ceramic and it is adorned with Hublot’s signature H-shaped titanium screws. The crown at 3 o’clock is signed with the Hublot logo and is also blacked brushed bronze. The pushers, on the other hand, are black ceramic. So there is a range of contrasting colors and materials in play here. The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, which is adequate for a sports watch.

The dial

The dial is a sunray blue and features 3N gold-plated applied hour markers and 3N gold-plated hour and minute hands, and the gold theme continues in the two subdials, which have gold rims, gold markers, and gold hands. The Hublot logo at 12 o’clock and “Automatic” wording at 6 o’clock are also in gold. Curiously, the date at 6 o’clock uses white font, which, presumably, is to help it stand out so that it can be read more easily. To complement the blue dial, the watch comes with a blue alligator strap with gold stitching on the sides and rubber lining on the back for wearing comfort – and Hublot’s straps are indeed comfortable.

The movement

The movement within is the good old caliber HUB1143, Hublot’s basic self-winding chronograph movement. An integrated chronograph movement it ain’t. Instead, it employs an ETA base and a chronograph module from Dubois Dépraz. It runs at 4Hz and has a power reserve of around 42 hours. The movement can be seen through a sapphire display case back.

A Hublot Classic Fusion replica watch with a blue dial isn’t exactly new. Hublot already produces one in titanium. That said, one with a blue dial and a specially treated bronze case is novel and kind of interesting. Personally, I find the Classic Fusion Bronze Bucherer Blue Edition quite attractive based on Hublot’s press pictures. According to Hublot, what allows the ceramic to stay so brightly colored is that it is sintered in a different way that sets the ceramic without burning the added pigment, which would normally dull the color. While I think the recent trend toward casing watches in massive blocks of colored sapphire (another Hublot favorite) is mostly just a fad, I think colored ceramics and high-strength ceramics have the ability to change the way watches are made long term. Whether or not a vivid red chronograph is your bag or not, this watch does have implications that could end up affecting your own watches someday.

Initial Thoughts

In case you had any doubts, this watch definitely isn't to my personal taste. It's big, it's in-your-face, and it's not ashamed of any of that. That's not really my thing. However, from a material science standpoint, I do find it really interesting. There's a lot more out there than just the usual suspects – steel, titanium, gold, platinum, and the like – and even those can be altered and modified in all kinds of interesting ways. A brand of Hublot's size and industry stature has the resources to really experiment in this direction (with Omega being another notable leader here), and it's good to see them pushing thing.

While the basic shape of the timekeeper seems to be identical to that of other members of their growing Classic Fusion family, this new Hublot Classic Fusion Bol d’Or Mirabaud limited edition model delivers a very nice combination of materials and textures that make this gadget shine in all meanings of this word.

As you can see on these promotional photos, the lightweight titanium body of the device features a tasteful blend of mirror-polished (the case itself, the bezel ring and chronograph push-pieces) and satin-finished parts (the center part of its long angled lugs). This interesting mix is elegantly accented with carbon fiber insert in the bezel, the dial and even the strap where the material is stitched to black rubber band for better comfort and durability.

Although the oversized navy blue sub-dials with their sunburst pattern look a bit obvious on a watch that celebrates the 76th annual Bol d’Or Mirabaud regatta, an event which is held every year on the Lake Geneva, I must admit that the choice of color looks very organic here. The sub-dials not only provide the rugged-looking face of the timekeeper a bit more elegant look, but also make the device look more organic on a wrist of a man wearing a club blazer over a pair of blue jeans.

Of course, measuring 45 millimeters in diameter, the watch is massive, but so are other members of the Classic Fusion collection, so there is nothing to complain here about: you either take it or leave it, it is that simple. Have in mind, however, that the timepiece was designed to be beautiful, not ergonomic. Although the choice of metal makes the chronograph quite light, the shape of its case and the form of its lugs does not make this gadget terribly comfortable per se, but if you happen to own a thin and narrower than usual wrist, there is a good chance that fairly soon you will course the day you bought one.

Even if you seriously plan to order the Bol d’Or Mirabaud on-line, don’t be shy and pay a visit to your local Hublot boutique and try it or some other member of the family on your hand. Better safe than sorry, you know.

As you have probably already guessed, the number of these ultra-luxury time measuring devices that the company is going to produce will match the number of years the Bol d’Or Mirabaud regatta is in existence. Right, only 76 individually numbered pieces will be offered to a privileged few.
