IWC Pilot’s Mark XVIII Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”replica watch, in aid of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which aims to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage through sport programmes.
IWC has been working with the Foundation since 2005, and this is its 12th limited edition watch for the charity.
We’ve seen Laureus editions of the Da Vinci, Ingenieur, Portugieser and Portofino, but now the Schaffhausen brand has picked a pilot’s watch with purist appeal for the first time: the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII.
The dial
The design of the dial is, of course, highly recognisable – the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII is based on the famed Mark XI made for the post-war RAF. However, a 41mm case in black ceramic and the textured black calfskin strap give this new edition a very modern feel.
The black hands have been coated with luminescence to help them stand out against the dark blue dial (the dial colour of every IWC watch created for the Foundation); a black date window sits discreetly at 3 o’clock.
The Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” Caseback
The caseback features an unusual engraving: a drawing by 11-year-old Ana Claudia, a Brazilian student involved in a Laureus project called Instituto Reação, on the theme of “Time to Be Healthy”. The drawing was picked out of over 1,000 submissions, and shows a wheel divided into sections with each one representing a sport or the natural world.
Inside is the automatic calibre 35111 with a 42-hour power reserve, which has a Sellita base and has been used in across the Portofino and Ingenieur lines, among others.
The watch is limited to 1,500 pieces, with a part of the proceeds from sales supporting Laureus Sport for Good. The charity contributes to over 100 programmes in 35 countries, tackling key issues including health and education.
