The Speedmaster "DARK SIDE OF THE MOON" APOLLO 8
Bright yellows, detailed blacks in matte and polish, and a familiar Speedy layout suggest this isn't a standard Dark Side Of The Moon. Legibility remains very strong, especially for the chronograph elements, which get the bulk of the bright yellow coloring. The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch chronograph fake hands are varnished yellow, while the watch's tachymeter scale and crown are filled with white Super-LumiNova. the dial has been expertly skeletonised to reveal a blackened movement inside. The Speedmaster and Tachymetre words also appear in yellow. As well as having a skeletonised dial, this collectable watch is remarkable for its specially decorated version of the famous Moonwatch calibre 1861, the movement has been laser-ablated to produce realistic imagery of the lunar surface. The Moon On Your Wrist
Presented on a perforated black leather strap with yellow rubber through the middle, this Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Apollo 8 watch copy's unique design remains true to Apollo 8's pioneering spirit. The entire watch is produced in sleek black ceramic, I keep referencing the case thickness of the Co-Axial 44.25mm Speedies, but here’s the key detail you need to know. Given the shape of the crystals on either end of the case, and the extra room needed for its self-winding caliber, a Co-Axial caliber Speedmaster is 16.3mm thick.Even with shorter lugs, this makes for a whole lot of watch to strap on any wrist that's under 7" in diameter. Trimming this down by what may sound like an inconsequential 2.5mm, but the biggest chop comes from the caseback, which significantly changes how the watch sits on your wrist. Rather than having the caseband free-floating above your wrist, its profile is back where it belongs, and the curve of its lugs actually hug the wrist as originally intended.
The Caseback
Around the transparent caseback, the words "WE'LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE" reference Jim Lovell’s final words spoken to ground control just before Apollo 8 travelled to the far side of the moon. The dial-side of this watch is a light shade with a landscape full of craters to represent our view of the moon’s surface from Earth.A wide sapphire-covered display case back highlights the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 replica's use of Omega's Calibre 1861 hand-wound chronograph movement. With bridges finished to match the lunar-like details of the dial, this 1861 is a mix of dark textures, purple jewels, and the varied brightwork of metal cams and wheels.
